What are "Addons" 编辑

Addons are content created usually by a 3rd party which can be loaded into Arma2 to give users a vast range of new content and/or features. The array of addons range from small community fixes, to soundmods, new models and total conversion modfications.

Downloading Addons 编辑

Addons are usually packaged in .7zip / .rar or .zip formats, to unpack these you will need one of the following tools or similar:

Installing Addons 编辑

Prerequisites 编辑

  • A downloaded MOD from the above sources
  • A copy of ARMA2 or OA
  • Any "Required" modifications that your mod requires

MOD folders 编辑

It is advised that all users create MODFOLDERS to install their downloaded modifications instead of putting their mods in the "ADDONS" folder within the Arma 2 Root or Arma2\Expansions\Addons directories. Using MODFOLDERS allows users to load and unload modifications via command line parameters or 3rd party tools which will be explained later in this document.

A modfolder should be structured as follows
> @MyNewMod
-> Addons
--> (.pbo files in this folder)

This translates to C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\Arma 2\@MyNewMod\Addons\

Step by Step 编辑

1. Browse to your ARMA 2 installation directory
For most people this will be located at: C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2

2. Create a new folder prefixed by an @ symbol and followed by your desired folder name
The @ symbol isn't a requirement but helpful to distinguish your modfolders from original game folders.

3. With your new folder create a further folder called Addons

4. Open your downloaded MOD in the package of your choice, and extract the files into the directory of the folder you have just made

5. Your files should now be present in @MyNewMod\Addons

Running Addons 编辑

Once you've installed new addons as above, you now have to get them running with your game. This is done by starting the game with the commandline parameter -mod= or by using the in game expansions manager. Since no one wants to start the game via console, a step-by-step guide how to create a shortcut for your mods will follow. Alternatively you could make use of tools designed for managing mod and profiles, so called ArmA2 Launchers which are described at the bottom.

Creating a mod shortcut 编辑

Create a shortcut (for example by copying the existing ArmA2 shortcut on your desktop) and open the properties window by right clicking on the shortcut and choosing properties.
You will be presented with a window showing the Target and Start In paths for the shortcut. For the task of adding mods you will be focussing on the Target box.

Your target will read something similar to this:

"C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\arma2oa.exe"

To add mods to the EXE you will be using the -mod= switch to assign various mods to the shortcut in question. This switch is simply written after the quotes in the target line.
Example:

"C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\arma2oa.exe" -mod=

For adding mods, you simply add the folder names of the mods you wish to load. It is important to note that after each MOD you must add a ; this is unless it is the last mod in the modline.
Example:

"C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\arma2oa.exe" -mod=@Mod1;@Mod2;@Mod3;@MyNewMod

It really is that simple! Save your shortcut and run it as normal to load your modline. You should then be able to use your mods ingame.

Expansions manager 编辑

Simple way of handling mods is using the in game expansions manager. One real advantage of doing it that way is that it no longer matter from where you launch the game (be it steam, other version etc.). It makes clean installations also much simpler than messing within the game folder. When a mod is installed properly to its own modfolder you can enable it by:

  • Running the game
  • In the game go to the Expansions, select the mod(s) and click on Enable button, restart the game
  • Now the mod is installed and you can play easily with it anytime

Over the years, tools have been created by community members in aid of making the lives of the Arma 2 user base easier, the most common tools that you can download are described here. The main aim of the tools is to provide the user with the ability to build custom profiles and change mod settings with the click of a button, while auto detecting your installed mods.
